Ayotte Dem colleague Schumer says Bloomberg ads don’t work

New York Senator Chuck Schumer has been one of the most ardent advocates of increased gun control measures, and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has spearheaded a relentless ad campaign targeting senators who don’t back such proposals.
Yet in a recent interview with Time, Schumer minced no words when it came to his thoughts on Bloomberg’s tactics, saying that the billionaire’s ads were ineffective.
“I am trying to persuade–in whatever way I’m allowed to–the gun groups to put out different ads. Frankly, I don’t think Bloomberg’s ads are effective,” he stated. “The mayor of New York City putting ads against people in red states is not going to be effective.”
Schumer went on to mention that one senator targeted in the ad campaign stated constituents “shrugged off the spot because an accent revealed the speaker to be an actor.”
Among those targeted in the ads is New Hampshire Senator Kelly Ayotte, with Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns group pumping hundreds of thousands into TV ads claiming she opposes background checks due to her vote against the Manchin-Toomey gun proposal.
But as New Hampshire Journal’s Shawn Millerick has noted, the ads have been repeatedly exposed as shirking Ayotte’s overall record on background checks.
