Ayotte Says Wait on Supreme Court Nominee

Republican New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte weighed in on the debate surrounding when a replacement for Justice Antonin Scalia should be considered telling the DC based news site POLITICO that she believes the Senate should not move forward with a Supreme Court nominee until after the presidential election.

According to POLITICO Sen. Ayotte said, “We’re in the midst of a consequential presidential election year, and Americans deserve an opportunity to weigh in given the significant implications this nomination could have for the Supreme Court and our country for decades to come. I believe the Senate should not move forward with the confirmation process until the American people have spoken by electing a new president.”

Ayotte, a former New Hampshire Attorney General, is up for reelection in 2016.

Justice Scalia passed away over the weekend while on vacation, visitation and funeral arrangements have not yet been made public.
