CST exemption repeal highlighted in ‘Maggie’s Tax of the Day’ #59

Today’s addition into Ovide Lamontagne’s ongoing ‘Maggie’s Tax of the Day’ series highlights former state Senator Hassan’s vote to repeal the Communications Service Tax (CST) “on the first $12 of residential service.”

“This tax increase cost each family with a phone line $144 annually, and the Department of Revenue stated in a 2006 fiscal note the tax would raise more than $5.5 million annually from additional taxation on residential phone lines for the general fund,” states today’s press release.

The vote was cast in 2007 as part of a budget that, as the Lamontagne campaign points out, hiked total government spending by somewhere in the neighborhood of $1 billion.
