Fed says unions have legal right to display giants inflatable rats during labor disputes

Federal regulators say union activists have the legal right to display giant inflatable rats outside companies during labor disputes.

The National Labor Relations Board says putting up a 16-foot-tall rat balloon is allowed even if the business is not directly involved in the conflict between the union and another employer.

The Carpenters union and other labor groups often use the giant rat as a form of street theater. The goal is to shame companies that hire outside contractors who refuse to use union workers or pay union-scale wages.

The case was closely watched by business groups who claim the giant rat is too coercive and confrontational. But the labor board says the rats are a form of symbolic speech that don’t interfere with business activity.

Hey unions – make a comparable bid for the job, and quit having your groups standing on the corner for smoke breaks all day if you don’t want to be seen as the rat.  The companies are hiring workers for construction, not lazy bums to watch the grass grow.

    • Ddra40

Oh I agree with you about unions biding just like everyone, but the problem is, when we lose the bid, we don’t picket the companies.

How about a .22 with birdshot?

      • romneybarbour2012

A .22 is a rifle. It shoots a single small projectile. I believe you were thinking of a 20 gauge. Either one would be excellent for taking down the big balloon, but why would you want to do that? I think it is pretty clear from the posts on here that 95% of the people who see one think, “That must be their mascot”

        • Farmer

You can get shot shells for a .22 caliber rifle.  We use them for shooting rats on the farm.  (True story)

This is all about limiting Free Speech. After all, censorship is everywhere. The gov’t (and their big business cronies) censor free speech, shut down dissent and ban the book “America Deceived II”. Free speech for all.

Hank, come on, stop trying to make something that isn’t so. The book is NOT banned it is available on Amazon and other on line book stores. It has a very low demand and poor reviews. Now that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be availalble and also that there may be some goodness in it, but it isn’t banned. Just poor sales and a low production of the book.

It isn’t banned if I can buy it in the store. Clue, obtain at all costs.

It so nice to see that Union dues are going towards something worthwhile. Union members who do not want their dues to be involved in such political tomfoolery should be allowed to have their dues opted out.
According to the Unions, they’re members are supposed to be so down trodden and poor due to the economy, but they have funds to spend on such silliness.

To every worker who is represented by a union: You DO NOT have to join the union, even if you are not in a right-to-work state. You can file an objection letter annually giving the reason(s) you are morally opposed to joining. You can’t attend their little meetings, vote in union elections, or hold office. You still have to pay a good deal of the dues, but not nearly all. They can’t then use your money for political purposes, displaying rats, supporting liberal weenie causes (gay rights, abortion, etc). You can get more info at http://www.nrtw.org (the National Right to Work organization). You CAN fight back. That’s what I have done.

  • Good for the Gander

I wonder what will happen when I display a giant inflatable leech in front of the local union hall. Just watch how fast the unions will spring into action to destroy it. I’m sure the last thing they will consider would be my right to free speech.

    • Pkarakis

That was my thought.  Everytime we see the rat, the business should put up a leech.

      • Loquinx

You may call it leeching…but supporting a company that pays substandard wages for skilled labor and often times dangerous work is not helping the average American. If you want to kneel down in front of your boss to please him then do so. Do not expect the rest of us to.

        • Keep it Real

Buddy, you are the one kneeling down in front of your boss, spit or swallow, you choose. If it wasn’t for unions most Americans would still have decent paying jobs. Instead we had mechanics who worked in factories and demanded things like double time on the weekend to the tune of $80/hour or the guy who sweeps the floor demanding $30/hour. So like a good business would do, they found people in China, who are just as qualified do the job for say $35/hr and $7/hour respectively. Unions have priced themselves out of the market and have no one to blame but yourselves. You are the slave to your master, and the master got his and you got OUTSOURCED…

          • Lola

If we didn’t have unions, you would be competing with a 12 year old for your job that would pay a couple bucks an hour and have no safety regulations.  Lose a finger, don’t cry to your boss.  Read a history book.  Oh, I’m sorry, I forgot – we don’t have time to actually teach our children, we just test them.

          • Fab4fan62

Lola…. did you know less than 12% of the workforce is unionized…. so I guess the other 88% are 12 year old kids. as far as teaching our kids… those UNION teachers are molesting them. According to a study in 2005 by The American Association of University Women Educational Foundation authored by Charol Shakeshaft between 1991 and 2000 290,000 students experienced some sort of physical sexual abuse by a public school employee. The same study found that between 1950 and 2002 10,667 were mistreated by priests…. but everyone is upset bu the priest. Oh yea… unions are great…

          • Lola

HISTORY!!  Read . . . HISTORY.  The history of the United States of America.  I’m glad to hear you are familiar with current facts.  I am talking about history and the import that unions have in our HISTORY.  And I am sorry to hear that you were apparently molested by your teachers.  And as someone who works in the criminal justice system, I can tell you that people from all walks of life molest children.  To place such an act on a specific group in an attempt to make a point is not only inaccurate and careless, but just plain ignorant.  Tell your children to watch out for their bio or step dad. Tell your children to watch out for their neighbor.  Tell your children to watch out for their babysitter.  Tell you children to watch out for their priest. And yes, tell your children to watch out for their teacher.  ALL walks of life, union or not.  Comparing the two just illustrates your lack of serious thought on the matter.

          • SCjams

            HISTORY! HISTORY LOLA TELLS US!!

Well, Lola, can you find us one company in America that is hiring 12 year olds? Can you find us one company where you can’t be compensated (or go on disability, especially if you aren’t white) for losing a finger?

            No?

Guess that’s why it’s called HISTORY. Old news. Like slavery and cassette tapes. Or like the NAACP. No longer applicable, get it?

    The union manifesto.

I do not want to do the work to get the education I need to become a manager.
I do not want to be held accountable for productivity as an individual.
I do not want a job that conflicts with my daydreams and personal conversations.
I do not want a job that requires me to think as hard and work as long as my manager.
I do not want to risk my financial future like the owners of my company.
I do not care if my employer makes a profit to enable growth or to reward the investors.
I want my pay and benefits to be good enough to make my manager jealous.
I want to retire young with a defined benefit retirement plan.

There has never been a true democratic socialist country.  Though by your standards you would label most of northern europe as socialist.  All of those countries have higher quality of life, longer lifespans, and score higher in trust of government and happiness in life than the US, which scores below half of Earth consistantly.

          • Anonymous

That’s because there will never be a democratic socialist state. Socialism itself breeds corruption in those that get into a leadership position. Socialism and communism have always proved to be at least as corruption ridden as capitalism if not a lot more. And socialism /communism are in direct opposition from freedom of the individual. They are the tools of slavery.

Actually, that’s the position of the American Left. In their small minds, communism didn’t fail because it’s inherently unworkable. They believe it failed because those in charge weren’t dedicated enough to the struggle. Every little snot-nosed lefty in American honestly believes that he/she/it could make communism work, if only they were put in charge and given absolute power over the lives of everyone else…

Little boy, 30 years ago I was in Central/South American socialist countries doing things you wouldn’t have the guts to begin to do and let me tell you, I saw the results of Socialism. Bodies in the ditches. Good people who just wanted to live a simple life. Killed because they didn’t fit the ideas of socialims. Pol Pot killed HALF his country, Mao as many as 80 Million, Hitler (nazi=national SOCIALIST workers party) 7 million jews and “undesirables”…..you should grow up.

Yes unions have problems that need to be fixed…But I can’t believe so many drink the corporate american Kool-Aid!  Wake up people!  Who do you think removed children from coal mines, made companies pay their people a minimum wage, created a weekend work break, an 8 hour work day, overtime pay, health insurance, or improved employee/customer safety?  HINT: It wasn’t Bernie Madoff, Lloyd Blankfein, or even everyone’s favorite ersatz corporate grandpa Warren Buffet.

The decline of our unions has given rise to the ever longer work week, erosion of health benefits, and the retirement pension that disappears the minute you go to collect it.  In the new corporate american view, the only people accorded a decent living are the CEOs and management…Nevermind the people who actually run and build the business.  And they’ll walk away after the company fails with millions in cash and stock while the lawyers and investment bankers pick the remaining resources from the carcass.  The employees are left with nothing but to scramble to find another “McJob” or face personal and financial doom.

It’s called the American Dream now because you have to be asleep to believe it.

Spare me the juvenile argument about pay, Dan. Your corrupt thug unions have no

Where did the workman’s job insurance go? ~~Away, with the job he lost to the non-unionized overseas workers.

When was the last time i felt secure enough to take a vacation due to downsizing? ~~Over 3 years ago.

What overtime pay? My company downsized IT, now the local staff hires me as a contractor to keep things running.  Contractors aren’t allowed overtime.

They can’t afford to hire new IT workers, due in part to the severance pay they paid the old IT workers when they fired them all, and outsourced tech support overseas.

Hey! maybe we contractors should unionize, so the company can move the rest of their enterprise overseas!

  • Anonymous

Obviously the NLRB is less a board and more a collection of organized labour stooges.

This is not about labour relations at all.  The rat is harassing businesses that have no ongoing disputes with their hired labour (contractors).  The contractors also have no ongoing disputes with their hired labour.  So the rat is essentially utilized to attempt to create conflict where none currently exists, and it’s an ad-hominem attack as well, not something that would be considered “symbolic speech” that is in any way, shape or form constructive.

35 years ago my dad got me a summer job pulling weeds at a labor union hall. President of the hall came out every 15 minutes to make sure I had pop and chips. He told me not to work so hard. I was paid way more than I earned. Even as a 12 year old I could see what unionized labor stands for…

The downfall of many unions were the union members. As they made high hourly wages they did not  use union products they produced. But instead hired non union to build their homes and saved money buying cheap non union products. The reason government unions are successfull they are not based in the free market,we all must use that service or product. And we must by law use it.As they sit down to hammer out benefits and wages there is one party missing at the table, the sucker on the hook paying the bill. We the people must pay even if broke, even our right to healthcare is not a right as union benefits come first. Strange situation.

Give the rat a coffee cup, display it leaning against a machine, and you have the perfect counter union display.

The only rats are the union scum.

Now just who cares how Nobama’s NLRB cronies ruled.  Grandma with a big hatpin or grandpa with a cigar butt can take care of any union rat!

Inflatable rat?  I thought it was Richard Trumka.  The resemblance is eerie!

When I see the rat, I say to myself………… I’m doing business with that guy.  The Rat is a badge of honor.  Wherever the dirt ball union guys go the rat is sure to follow.

Typical. It takes a rat to use a rat in such a way. I will support the other side too. But tell me? Who asked the rats which side they were on. Seems the unions are taking advantade of an animal who cannot defend themselves. Oh, excuse me. That’s just how they do us non union workers. Take advantage of us.

this might be helpful, it’s sign that this place is going to have better prices than the inflated union businesses.

If I were the Companies, I would be proud to have one of those Rats out Front! It’s the Certified Mascot of every Union in this Country!

Nice typo in the headline.  Must have been a union proofreader.

Do you like working 40 hrs a week instead of 60 like the fat non union rats would just love to have you do? Enjoy your sick leave or sick pay? Coffie breaks and lunches? Materity leave? Greive time? Equal pay for equal work. You women must love being overlooked for promotions. You might want to do a little reserch on just what the Unions do for the average American Skilled Worker. Next time you are in a High Rise building, on an Air Craft Carrier that defends this great nation or flying in a commercial jet (Pilot,Air Traffic Controller Ground Crew) that is around 30,000 feet in the air, or when your elecriicity goes out it’s that Skilled Union labor that makes all this happen. Not women and children from other countries that can care less as long as they get thier $2.oo a day (14 Hrs).and are happy to get anything while the “big business” rake in all the profits. Police, Fire, Nurses, Line workers and the list goes on. I can tell all the poor pepole that are not skilled labor from your comments. I would be bitter too.
