House Republicans are off the rails with ‘birther bill’
When Democrats in New Hampshire unfairly maligned Rep. David Bates’ (R-Wndham) religious beliefs, NH Journal drew national attention to their absurd and bigoted attacks.
It is now time for us to call Rep. Bates out. Bates chairs the New Hampshire House Election Law Committee and he backs and amendment that may come up for a vote on Wednesday that would force candidates for President in the first-in-the-nation primary to produce the “long form of their birth certificate.” This is the same document that so-called ‘birthers’ claim President Barack Obama cannot produce because, they believe, he was born in Kenya.
Barack Obama was born in Hawaii. And this measure will be the end of New Hampshire’s storied place in American political history as the lead-off presidential primary state.
Bates should pull the measure from consideration. If he does not, House Republican leadership should relieve him of his Chairmanship.
