Updated: In new ad, Rand Paul urges ‘leave-me-the-hell-alone’ voters to support Brown

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul appears today in new 15-second television ad for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, appealing to “liberty-loving” voters to support Republian Senate challenger Scott Brown.

The state Democratic Party said Paul has a “radical and out of the mainstream” voting record and said “the fact that he has become a top surrogate for Scott Brown just further proves how wrong Scott Brown is for New Hampshire.”

In a message directed to staunch conservative/libertarian voters who may not be enthralled with Brown, Paul – a potential 2016 presidential candidate – looks into the camera and says:

“If you’re a freedom-loving, liberty-loving, leave-me-the-hell-alone voter, I urge you to get out to vote for Scott Brown this Tuesday. To change Washington, change your senator.”

It is the U.S. Chamber’s third ad in favor of Brown – following ads featuring 2012 presidential nominee Mitt Romney and focusing on Sen. Jeanne Shaheen’s support for the Affordable Care Act.

But NHDP spokesman Julie McClain said, Rand Paul’s record is extreme – he voted for a federal personhood amendment that would criminalize all abortion, voted against the Violence Against Women Act and paycheck fairness, and championed the government shutdown.”

The party pointed out that Paul co-sponsored legislation stating that life begins at conception in 2011 and said the bill would “reverse Roe v. Wade without the need for a constitutional amendment.” It noted he opposed the Violence Against Women Act, saying domestic violence measures should be handled at the state level, and against the Paycheck Fairness Act.

The NHDP also noted that Paul was a leader in a move to link continued government funding to repeal of the Affordable Care Act.
