NH Journal first: Veteran NH strategist Ethan Zorfas joins Cruz campaign as senior advisor

Now that Ted Cruz is an announced candidate for President, the conservative Texas senator has taken the first step in organizing a campaign team in New Hampshire.

The New Hampshire Journal has learned that veteran GOP strategist and operative Ethan Zorfas has been named a senior advisor to the Cruz campaign. The major part of that role will be building and organizing Cruz’s campaign in the first-primary state.

Zorfas will also have a broader role assisting Cruz’s campaign in other states, including Louisiana, where he was the general consultant for Sen. Bill Cassidy’s win over 18-year incumbent Democrat Mary Landrieu. He has been a consultant for Cassidy since 2008.

Confirming his appointment, Zorfas said, “Ted Cruz is a strong conservative candidate for President. I am looking forward to joining his team and building his campaign here in New Hampshire. He is looking forward to continuing to meet with Granite Staters over the next year and earning their support.”

Zorfas has long been close to U.S. Rep. Frank Guinta, but his role for Cruz will have no bearing on who Guinta endorses in the presidential primary, should he choose to endorse at all. Guinta has been meeting with most, if not all, of the announced and potential GOP candidates.

Zorfas has been with Guinta for more than five years. Most recently he was the senior advisor to Guinta’s successful 2014 campaign that saw him return to Congress.

Zorfas also headed Guinta’s unsuccessful campaign to remain in the House in 2012 and was a top consultant to Guinta’s successful 2010 campaign, as well as for U.S. Rep. Charlie Bass’s winning campaign that same year. He was then named Guinta’s chief of staff on Capitol Hill during that term. And in 2008, he held a post with the National Republican Congressional Committee.

Cruz, who formally announced his candidacy for President on Monday, was in New Hampshire just more than a week ago and will return on Friday for a rally in Merrimack organized by the Conservative Business League of  New Hampshire, and to speak to a Young Americans for Freedom New England conference in Nashua. On Saturday, he is scheduled to keynote a brunch at the Portsmouth County Club co-sponsored by the Rockingham County Republican Committee and the Seacoast Republican Women.

He is also among 16 announced or likely presidential candidates scheduled to attend the NHGOP’s “First-in-the-Nation Republican Leadership Summit” on April 17 and 18.
