PFAW hits Republicans for taking trip sponsored by alleged ‘hate group’

In a new web ad, the left-leaning activist group People for the American Way has targeted the Republican National Committee for encouraging its members to go on a trip to Israel with all expenses paid for by a group that has used anti-gay, anti-Jewish and anti-Mormon language.

NHGOP Jennifer Horn was among the approximately 60 members who went on the trip sponsored by the American Family Association and its American Renewal Project last week through Sunday. NHGOP Executive Director Elissa Voccola told the New Hampshire Journal last Tuesday that Horn “does not agree with or condone comments made by some individuals associated with AFA and the American Renewal Project,” but viewed the trip as an opportunity for “participants to advance their understanding of U.S.-Israel relations.”

The PFAW ad asks, “Why are members of the Republican National Committee taking an all-expense paid trip to Israel from a hate group that claims ‘Jewish atheists’ are among ‘the worst enemies of the country?’”

People for the American Way has listed on its “Right Wing Watch” website comments made by former AFA spokesman Bryan Fischer, David Lane of the AFA’s American Renewal Project and AFA governmental affairs director Sandy Rios directed at Jews, Mormons and gay Americans.

“The hate of the American Family Association is rampant, from calling ‘Jewish atheists’ some of the ‘worst enemies of the country’ to claiming that gay people caused the Holocaust,” said Michael Keegan, PFAW president. “We deserve to know why Republicans continue to stand with this hate group after years of offensive statements by their leaders. By failing to speak up against the AFA, Republican leaders are showing their acceptance of hateful rhetoric in their party.”
