Pro-Rubens PAC disbands, but Humphreys still back him

CONCORD – After putting about $120,000 into the New Hampshire PAC to Save America, former Sen. Gordon Humphrey and his wife, Patricia, have terminated the pro-Jim Rubens effort.

Gordon Humphrey told the New Hampshire Journal that he and his wife continue to support Rubens for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Jeanne Shaheen, however.

“There is no doubt about that,” he said. “We still support him.”

Humphrey said Monday afternoon that he had just returned from a trip of several thousand miles through Mexico, Guatemala and Belize, and was unsure why the PAC was disbanded.

“I’m just catching up and am in no position to comment,” he said.

Michael Dennehy, a consultant for the PAC, said the Humphreys “spent and executed the plan they had hoped for. Their goal was to help out Jim Rubens in the more quiet days of the early and mid-summer and they felt and expected that Jim and his campaign would take over paid media advertising in the laslt several weeks of the campaign.

“So it was basically all according to plan,” Dennehy said. “And they certainly continue to support him.”

The PAC had no connection to the Rubens campaign, which is still very much up and running.

Patricia Humphrey was listed as the sole donor to the PAC, having contributed $140,000 through July 15. The termination report on file with the Federal Election Commission shows she refunded about $21,000 to herself.

The PAC put out direct mail in favor of  Rubens and questioning candidate Scott Brown’s record. It also purchased billboard space.

It also continues to have a web site, www.realscottrecord.com, questioning Brown’s Republican bonafides.

The termination was first reported on Twitter by Dave Levinthal of the Center for Public Integrity.
