(Earlier report follows)

LOUDON – Conservative Republican farmer Howard Pearl said today he is ending his state Senate District 17 campaign for personal reasons.

He would not elaborate.

Although his name must remain on the ballot, he is, in effect, dropping out of the race, he said.

Pearl ran for the seat in 2012, losing a narrow GOP primary election to Sen. John Reagan of Deerfield. The two were headed for a re-match on Sept. 9. The Secretary of State’s Office confirmed that a candidate’s name must remain on the ballot once the candidate has filed, unless the candidate is disqualified.

Pearl issued this statement:

“Running for state Senate has been one of the best experiences of my life as I have thoroughly enjoyed visiting with Granite Staters about their thoughts and concerns on how best to move New Hampshire forward. Regrettably, I have an unforeseen personal issue and effective immediately I am dropping out of the race.”

Pearl is the owner of Pearl and Sons Farm in Loudon.

When he filed for the seat in June he was immediately endorsed by long-time former state Sen. Jack Barnes.

(Update:) Reagan Wednesday afternoon issued a statement on Pearl’s decision:

“I send my prayers and best wishes for a resolution to the circumstances leading to Howard Pearl’s withdrawal for the State Senate District 17 primary race. His family is on my prayer list,” said Sen. Reagan.

Now this is a shame because it doesn’t leave anyone but Looney Reagan. So I have a choice, vote for Loonies commie-crat opponent, or don’t vote for anyone in that race. I think anyone BUT Reagan will get my vote.
