Romney’s savvy staff move

John DiStaso of the New Hampshire Union Leader reported yesterday that Jason McBride will run Mitt Romney’s effort in New Hampshire, should the former-Massachusetts Governor decide to run for the Republican presidential nomination again; something that is all but certain.

McBride is from Michigan and, so far as we can tell, has no experience in New Hampshire politics. So is the move a blunder on Romney’s part?

No.

We’ve asked around. McBride is a competent leader who operates coolly under pressure and can manage sprawling organizations, sources tell us. He is also trusted by Romney’s inner circle of leaders, who by all accounts are deeply concerned about the tightness of their ship and operational discipline.

By putting McBride in charge, Romney’s team can make important strategic and tactical decisions apart from certain tribal loyalties that tend to distort best intentions. Besides, Romney has a catalogue of New Hampshire advisers and friends who can offer him a local perspective.

Romney’s choice of McBride is a smart move.
