Vaillancourt comments about Kuster denounced as ‘sexist’ by Garcia

Republican 2nd District U.S. House candidate Marilinda Garcia and the state GOP tonight denounced comments posted about Democratic U.S. Rep. Ann Kuster’s appearance by Republican state Rep. Steve Vaillancourt of Manchester.

Vaillancourt, in a lengthy blog posted on NHInsider.com, wrote that Kuster is “ugly as sin,” while Garcia “is one of the most attractive women on the political scene anywhere.
“Yes indeed, if we stop to admit it, looks matter in politics,” he wrote.

The comments were first reported by a Democratic blog, Miscellany Blue, which called it a “misogynist rant.”

The comments were also reported nationally today by national media, including the Huffington Post, the CBS News, USA Today and the New York Daily News.

The Daily News headline began with the words, “UGLY politics….”

Garcia said in a statement, “State Rep. Vaillancourt’s recent comments about Rep. Ann Kuster are sexist and have absolutely no place in political discourse. Both Rep. Kuster and I have experienced this unfortunate reality of being a woman in politics. I hope that as time moves forward and more female candidates run for political office around the country, people will focus on the content of our ideas rather than what we wear and how we look.”

State Republican Party spokesman Lauren Zelt said, “Representative Vaillancourt’s comments have no place in political discourse. Voters will evaluate each candidate based on their records and reject Congresswoman Kuster because of her blind support for ObamaCare and her unwavering support for the President’s failed foreign policy that has diminished American’s standing in the world.”

Neither Kuster’s campaign nor the state Democratic Party immediately responded to requests for comment tonight.

Rep. Villain courts comments are totally inappropriate. This race is not about physicality. Marilinda is the most qualified candidate on her grasp of the issues, intelligence, and ability to express in detail the issues which Annie Custer has displayed an inability to do. Marilinda is simply the better candidate to represent New Hampshire. Those are the things that count in any race. If we look in the mirror we a
Re all probably physically deficient in one way or another. If we stick to the issues before us there is no doubt Marilinda is the better qualified candidate.
