When the New Hampshire Food Bank needs help to fulfill its mission to feed hungry, it knows it can count on Walmart. Since 2004, Walmart has donated more than half a million dollars in direct contributions and in-kind contributions to the NH Food Bank, a program of New Hampshire Catholic Charities. Additionally, Walmart Associates have donated countless hours of their time volunteering to meet the needs of the hungry.
“One of the nicest things about our partnership with Walmart is that we know we can just pick up the phone and just ask for help and they continuously step up to the plate,” said Melanie Gosselin, Executive Director of the New Hampshire Food Bank.
In the past year Walmart has answered that call in many ways. Walmart employees voted to donate $100,000 to the New Hampshire Food Bank for food distribution. Additionally, Walmart granted $75,000 to support the Food Bank’s Backpack program that feeds hungry schoolchildren and the mobile food pantry. And because of their great local relationship with Walmart, the Food Bank with Walmart’s assistance received funding from Feeding America for a refrigerated box truck. In April Walmart was the food sponsor for the Backpack Program providing food to more than 900 students. And lastly, Walmart donated $50,000 to the Food Bank’s capital campaign to help pay for their new warehouse, headquarters, and culinary program in Manchester.
Beyond funding, Walmart and its associates are what Gosselin describes as a “huge resource” to the Food Bank. Some 850,000 lbs of food were donated through food pickups at Walmart stores throughout the state. Walmart Associates are regular visitors to the Food Bank helping out in any way they can. And when it came time to move into their new headquarters, Walmart expertise helped the Food Bank set up their new warehouse and they were able to move in one day.
“We are pleased to be able to partner with such a great organization as the New Hampshire Food Bank,” said Alexandra Dostie-Serra, Senior Manager of Government Relations and Public Affairs. “The Food Bank is on the front lines of the fight against hunger and Walmart has long supported their efforts. We look forward to continuing our partnership to help feed the hungry for years to come.”
Walmart recently announced a commitment of $2 billion in cash and in-kind contributions over the next five years to help end hunger in America.
“Walmart helps us in so many ways with grants, food donations, volunteers, logistical support and sponsorships,” said Gosselin. “We couldn’t ask for a better partner.”
